Committing To Your Purpose: What To Do When The Motivation Just Isn’t There

Today has been a day!

This morning, I woke up before the clock, but not in a “ready to take on the day” sort of way…No, it was more of a “Damn, I hope I have at least three more hours” sort of way…

No such luck!

I got through my workouts, but THAT was a struggle. My mind just wasn’t in it today. I wasn’t focused on cardio, lunges, or squats, I was thinking about everything else, the pot roast I’m making for dinner tonight, Paul McCartney concert tickets, getting my house straightened up before my one-on-one girls get here this afternoon, what I’m gonna eat for breakfast…All things totally unrelated to my morning routine, and in THAT specific order!

I was so unfocused, and just not into it, that I really did consider calling it a morning after Spin and Plyo…I had no intention of doing those damn Slam Ball Tuck Jump Burpees that finish out my early morning fasted routine on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays…It really wouldn’t have mattered, anyway. I already had a pretty good cardio session. That’s sufficient…And, that’s what I kept telling myself with each heart pounding rep, until I had completed all three sets of burpees, 30 reps total.

Working out doesn’t always come easy, even when you’re in the habit. Some days, it’s an uphill battle just to roll out of bed, especially when you don’t HAVE to…And, let’s face it, no one HAS to workout. I certainly don’t!

In this life, the only things we really have to do are eat, sleep, breathe, and pay our bills and taxes (in no particular order). Everything else is extra. Our hobbies, our lifestyles, our leisures are all choices we make. We choose to exercise. We choose to eat wholesome, nourishing foods. We choose to take better care of ourselves, in an effort to live our best lives. We do these things because we want the positive effects they bring about.

People often say to me, “I wish I had your motivation”…Truthfully, I wish had my motivation too! It make things a hell of a lot easier when the alarm goes off at 5:25 EVERY morning.

#TruthBomb: Motivation isn’t something that comes naturally…It’s not something that we just “have”.

Sure, we find It from time to time! It is, after all, the general desire or willingness of someone to do something, and it can be derived from both international and external factors, but it is not innate…We aren’t born with it. And, despite how it may seem, NO ONE, not even me, is motivated ALL the time!

What it all comes down to is determination and dedication. You have to establish your purpose for doing what you’re doing and commit yourself to that purpose. You have to decide what you REALLY want, set realistic goals, and be willing to do what it takes to achieve those goals, even on the days you don’t want to.

Getting and staying in shape is not as difficult as yo may think, but it does require work. It’ll all start with an extreme sense motivation, but that WILL fade…quickly!…What’ll KEEP you going and get you through every rep of every workout every day is the same thing that keeps me going, commitment to the purpose…Once you’ve committed yourself, the necessary actions will become almost second nature, and you’ll find it less and less difficult to do what needs to be done, even when the motivation just isn’t there.
